What is the detailed meaning of honoring one's parents (birr al-walidain)? What does it mean for parents to strive against their child? And who are the closest relatives with the primary right to affection, visits, and dutifulness?

The meaning of righteousness and kindness to parents is to associate with them in a good manner, to be humble towards them, and to obey their commands, but not to obey them if they command shirk (polytheism), while continuing to be kind to them. The closest relatives are the kin. In terms of righteousness, the mother comes first, then the father, then the children, then the grandparents, then the brothers and sisters, then all other unmarriageable relatives (mahārim) from among the kin, then relatives who are not unmarriageable such as the paternal uncle's son and the maternal uncle, then relations by marriage, then the freed slaves (mawāli), then the neighbor. Scholars have differed on the type of kin (raḥim) whose ties must be maintained, holding two opinions: the first is that it is limited to unmarriageable kin (al-raḥim al-muḥarram), and the second is that it is required for every relative, whether unmarriageable or not.
