The question

Is one Tasmiyah sufficient with the first shake of the bedding three times, or is Tasmiyah required with each shake? Is it permissible to shake the bedding by hand? What is the correct way to do so? Is wiping the bedding from the right considered an innovation?

The answer

Al-Bukhari and others narrated from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you goes to his bed, let him brush off his bed with the inside of his lower garment, for he does not know what might have come onto it after him. Then let him say: 'Bismika Rabbi wada'tu janbi wa bika arfa'uh. In amsakta nafsi farhamha, wa in arsaltaha fahfazha bima tahfaz bihi 'ibadaka as-salihin' (In Your name, my Lord, I lay my side and in Your name, I raise it. If You take my soul, then have mercy on it, and if You send it back, then protect it with what You protect Your righteous servants)." The narration about brushing off the bed does not mention saying "Bismillah" (in the name of Allah), but it is prescribed at the beginning of every significant matter. The hadith does not specify the starting direction for brushing off the bed, but it is preferable to start from the right, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) favored starting with the right in all his affairs.
