Is it permissible to get engaged online via voice and video, especially with the long distance and high travel costs, knowing that there is prior intellectual and religious conviction between both parties? And would there be any embarrassment if the engagement does not proceed after the voice and video acquaintance?

Online introductions between young men and women are fraught with many risks and harms, such as the ignorance of both parties, lying, and falsification. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid this method and seek reliable ways to ensure truthfulness, such as looking for a righteous woman within the family or social circle, or having the woman's guardian present her to a righteous young man.

If both parties observe the limits of Allah, and there is no private seclusion (khalwa) or indecent speech, and the matter is limited to introductions for the purpose of making a decision about engagement, then it is hoped that this would be permissible.
