Is it permissible to fast only 12 hours in Britain, where the fasting period exceeds 17 hours?
The appointed time for fasting is known; it is not permissible to add to it or subtract from it. Allah did not legislate fasting to cause hardship to His servants. What you have mentioned is not permissible for a Muslim to do, as it is a manipulation of religion and an overstepping of Allah's boundaries. Allah the Almighty said: "And these are the limits [set by] Allah. And whoever transgresses the limits of Allah has certainly wronged himself." (Quran 65:1). And whoever fasts out of faith and hope for reward will have his past sins forgiven. The meaning of "hope for reward" is not to find fasting burdensome. And whoever finds fasting unbearable due to extreme hardship may break his fast and then resume abstaining for the rest of the day, and he must make up for that day.
