What is the authenticity of attributing a hadith to Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, stating that "the intellect is in the heart," and what does it mean if it is authentic?

Scholars have differed on the location of the intellect (al-ʿaql). The Shafi'is and the majority of the theologians hold that it is in the heart, citing the Almighty’s words: "Have they not traveled through the land so that they may have hearts by which to reason?" (Qur’an 22:46), and the hadith: "Indeed, in the body there is a piece of flesh which, if it is sound, the whole body is sound, and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. Indeed, it is the heart."

Conversely, Abu Hanifa and some physicians are of the view that it is in the brain, reasoning that the corruption of the brain leads to the corruption of the intellect.

The correct view is that the intellect is connected to both the heart and the brain. The origin of thought and reflection is in the brain, while the origin and essence of will is in the heart. Both perspectives have validity.
