The answer

Islam has given great importance to married life, legislating principles and manners that preserve its bond. It has enjoined good companionship between spouses and that each fulfill the rights of the other. Allah Almighty says: "And due to them [the wives] is similar to what is expected of them, according to what is reasonable." Respect and understanding must prevail between spouses, overlooking faults, and frequently supplicating for the betterment of their condition. Efforts should also be made to seek arbitration from people of virtue and wisdom. Among what helps in reconciliation is for each party to compromise and forgive the other, to use reason, and to consider the welfare of the family and children, being wary of the child becoming a victim of discord.

The following points must be noted:

1. It is impermissible to strike the wife without a legitimate -based justification and without observing the regulations. However, if there is a justification, such as insolence (nushuz), a non-violent disciplinary beating is permissible when needed, if it will be beneficial, and provided that previous stages of discipline have been completed. 2. It is impermissible for a wife to leave her husband's house without his permission, except out of necessity to avert harm from herself. If there is no permission for her to leave, then she must return to him unless he permits her to go out. 3. It is impermissible to accuse a Muslim of something bad without evidence. The husband must be advised not to accuse his wife, as the consequence is often regret. 4. A brother has no right to order his sister's husband to divorce her. He should be advised to fear Allah and not strive to separate the wife from her husband.
