What is the methodology of interpretation (tafsir) according to Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn al-Qayyim?

Ibn Taymiyyah's methodology in Tafsir (Qur'anic exegesis) involved interpreting the Qur'an by the Qur'an itself, by the Hadith, and by the sayings of the Companions and their Successors. He admired Al-Tabari's Tafsir and criticized exegetes who included Isra'iliyyat (Biblical traditions), fabricated narrations, and theological discussions. He also condemned those who deviated from the interpretation of the Companions and the Successors. Ibn Taymiyyah has a treatise titled Usul al-Tafsir (Principles of Exegesis) in which he elucidated the types of Tafsir based on narration (riwayah) and intellectual reasoning (dirayah), emphasized the importance of the interpretations of the Companions and the Successors, warned against the danger of interpreting by mere opinion, and discussed the differences in interpretation among the Salaf (pious predecessors), stating that these differences were not contradictory. He also critiqued the superstitions found in some interpretations. Ibn Taymiyyah frequently engaged in extensive reading of Tafsir works and prayed to Allah to grant him understanding and knowledge.
