Is it permissible for a suitor to smell the perfume of his fiancée if she passes by him?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

A man remains a stranger to his fiancée before the marriage contract. It is not permissible for him to approach her so closely that he smells the scent of her perfume, nor is it permissible for her to wear perfume for the suitor to smell. This is based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Any woman who perfumes herself and passes by a gathering of people so that they may smell her fragrance is a an adulteress."
