Is it obligatory to make up the prayer if menstruation begins at the time of the call to ʿAṣr prayer, or upon waking in the morning, or when intentionally delaying the ʿIshāʾ prayer? And when should it be made up? And what are the opinions of the four schools of thought regarding this?

Scholars differ regarding making up prayers whose time was overtaken by menstruation.

The Hanafis and Malikis are of the view that it is not obligatory to make them up.

The Shafi'is hold that making them up is obligatory if enough time for the obligatory prayer has passed, otherwise not.

As for the Hanbalis, they believe it is obligatory to make them up if the time that passed is equivalent to the duration of the opening takbir or more.

The most cautious approach is to adopt the view of the Hanbalis, while the view of the Shafi'is has stronger evidence.

If a woman wakes up menstruating in the morning, and this occurs before sunrise, then the aforementioned ruling applies to her. However, if it occurs after sunrise, she must make up the prayer immediately if she is able.
