How can one respond to someone who argues that the Almighty's saying: "Then We made him a Nutfah in a firm resting place; then We made the Nutfah into an 'Alaqah; then We made the 'Alaqah into a Mudghah; then We made the Mudghah into bones; then We clothed the bones with flesh; then We brought him forth as another creation. So Blessed be Allah, the Best of creators" contradicts science because it does not mention the ovum, and that "firm resting place" does not include it, and that its omission compromises the clarity of the statement?

It is not necessary for the Quran to elaborate on every detail, but some contemporary scholars have discussed the topic of the ovum and its relation to the Quran. Some have stated that the description "nutfah amshaj" (a mingled sperm-drop) in the Quran refers to the fertilized ovum, which is a mixture from both sexes. Researchers believe that the Quran does not aim to teach embryology in detail, but rather presents facts that were unknown at the time of revelation. The discovery that an embryo is formed from a fertilized ovum was not made until after the invention of the microscope in the 17th century, and after long stages of scientific discoveries.

Sayyid Qutb believes that "nutfah amshaj" may refer to the formation of the sperm-drop from the male cell and the female ovum, or to the latent inheritances within the sperm-drop (genes). Muhammad Ali Al-Bar indicates that the ovum is in a follicle surrounded by fluid that flows out upon rupture to meet the sperm, and this aligns with the description "gushing water" in the Quran.

Some classical exegetes mention that water comes from both men and women, citing the Almighty's saying: "He was created from a gushing fluid that issues from between the loins and the ribs." Al-Qurtubi emphasized that creation occurs from the water of both the man and the woman, and that the woman discharges fluid just as the man does, which is why there is resemblance.
