What is the authenticity of the story of the elderly man who emigrated from Makkah to Madinah, and died on the way, striking his hands together and saying: "O Allah, this is my pledge to You, O Allah, this is my pledge to Your Prophet," whereupon the verse was revealed concerning him: "And whoever emigrates in the cause of Allah will find on the earth many a refuge and abundance"?

The story mentioned about the virtue of emigration (Hijrah (definition)) was not found. However, it was narrated from Ibn Abbas that Damra ibn Jundub set out as an emigrant but died on the way before reaching his destination. Then the verse was revealed: "And whoever leaves his home as an emigrant to Allah and His Messenger and then death overtakes him..." (Quran 4:100). In Tafsir (definition) al-Tabari, it is stated that the verse was revealed concerning an old man from Banu Layth who left Mecca ill, emigrating after hearing the verse: "Indeed, those whom the angels take in death while they are wronging themselves" (Quran 4:97). Death then overtook him at Tan'im.
