Is it prescribed to fast for an entire lifetime ( الدهر ) as a means of drawing closer to God, lifting affliction, bringing back a husband after a sudden divorce, and recovering from a spiritual illness?
Patience in the face of tribulation has good consequences. You have done well by engaging in supplication, seeking forgiveness, performing night prayers, and other such acts of devotion. A person's self- (self-exorcism/recitation) may be better for them than ruqyah performed by others. Allah the Almighty says: "Is not He (better than your gods) Who responds to the distressed one when he calls upon Him, and Who removes evil, and makes you inheritors of the earth, generations after generations. Is there any (other) god with Allah? Little is that you remember!" (An-Naml:62). Continue with these acts and increase your earnest supplication to the Lord. There is no objection to going to a raqi (one who performs ruqyah) provided that he is trustworthy in his religion and integrity, while observing the Shari'ah guidelines. We advise you to entrust your affairs to Allah the Almighty. He, glory be to Him, says: "And it may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you and that you like a thing which is bad for you. Allah knows but you do not know." (Al-Baqarah:216).
