Should the worshiper who caught the Imam in the last part of the first tashahhud complete his prayer, or should he follow the Imam if he stands up, knowing that if he were to complete the tashahhud, the Imam would have bowed before he stood up?
If the latecomer (ma'mum) joins the Imam during the final part of the first and the Imam then stands up, the latecomer is not obligated to complete the tashahhud; rather, he should follow the Imam. However, if he joined the prayer from the beginning and the Imam stands up before the latecomer has completed the tashahhud, the latecomer should complete it and then follow his Imam. The reason is that this tashahhud is not his first (own) tashahhud, so it is not obligatory for him. In the Shafi'i , there is a difference of opinion regarding whether he should recite the tashahhud with the Imam or not, but the stated position is that he should recite it with him. However, this tashahhud is not obligatory for him, because what is required is to follow the Imam in actions, not in recitations (adhkar).
