What is the ruling on one who omits the second taslim in prayer, and will he be punished for that?

Scholars have differed regarding the ruling on the second taslim in prayer. The majority view is that it is not obligatory, while the Hanbalis consider it a pillar (rukn). However, scholars whose opinions have been preserved agree that the prayer of one who restricts himself to a single taslim is permissible. What is most authentically reported from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, is the performance of two taslims in the obligatory prayers. The argument for those who suffice with a single taslim is the hadith of Aisha, which many scholars have deemed weak.
