Is it obligatory to perform ghusl immediately upon seeing a brownish or yellowish discharge after purification? Are prayers and reading the Qur’an on the seventh day valid? And what is the ruling on the days during which ghusl was delayed?
Purity from menstruation is achieved by dryness, which is ascertained by inserting a piece of cloth that comes out clean, free of blood, yellowness, or turbidity; or by the white discharge (al-Qassah al-Bayda’), which is a white fluid that appears after the cessation of menstruation. The latter is a more definitive sign of purity for those accustomed to it.
If the enquirer observes one of these two signs of purity in all cases, then all the mentioned periods are considered menstruation, whether the cycle increases or decreases by a day. She is not required to wait for the white discharge if she observes the recognized dryness. There is no harm for her in reciting the Qur’an after the cessation of menstruation and performing ghusl (ritual bath), and this is the view of the Shafi’i school.
Seeing turbidity within the white discharge or a red spot after menstruation has ended and purity has been achieved is not taken into consideration.
