"Wahhabism" is a label coined by the opponents of Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab for his reformist movement, which calls for pure monotheism and the rejection of polytheism (shirk) and innovations (bid'ah). The Sheikh was born in 1115 AH in Uyaynah, and he received his education there and in other regions. He was known for his sharp understanding and quick memorization. The Sheikh authored beneficial books, among them "Kitab al-Tawhid" (The Book of Monotheism). Many fair-minded scholars praised him, such as Sheikh Muhammad Rashid Rida, who described him as the renewer of Islam in Najd, and Muhammad Bahjat al-Bitar, who affirmed that he was a renovator of the call to Islam and a follower of the madhhab of Ahmad ibn Hanbal. Also, Imams al-San'ani and al-Shawkani praised him and acknowledged his efforts in spreading monotheism and combating innovations. Furthermore, the Hadith scholar Muhammad Bashir al-Sahwani praised him, clarifying that the Sheikh's sayings are consistent with the consensus of Muslims. As for Sheikh Ibn Baz, he is not a "Wahhabi" in the specific sense; rather, he is a Salafi scholar who draws from the same sources of monotheism and adherence to the Sunnah from which Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab and the Imams of the Salaf drew.
