Are "Whoever loves something other than Allah will be tormented by it... And whoever fears other than Allah will be dominated by them..." prophetic hadiths or sayings of the wise?

No hadith with the exact wording mentioned has been found. However, a weak and fabricated hadith has been reported from Ibn 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty only grants authority over the son of Adam to one whom the son of Adam fears. If the son of Adam feared none but Allah, no one would be given authority over him. And indeed, the son of Adam is entrusted to whomever the son of Adam places his hope in. If the son of Adam placed his hope in none but Allah, Allah would not entrust him to anyone else."
