Is it the case that a mother suckles a child other than her own only during times of famine? And how many feedings are required for the child to become her son? And which of her children would be considered a sibling to the nursed boy or girl?

1. Breastfeeding is permissible whether in times of famine or otherwise, but the need for it is greater during famine.

2. The number of sucklings that establish prohibition is a matter of differing opinion: five according to Shafi'i and Ahmad, one according to Abu Hanifa, and a single suckle according to Malik.

3. If the prohibition is established, the suckled child becomes a son to the wet nurse, and all her children become his brothers and sisters, as do the children of her husband from other wives.
