How can one distinguish between obsessive thoughts and self-generated thoughts, and how can it be proven that these thoughts are from obsessive whispers (waswas) and not from the self?
Satan lies in wait for humans with his whispers. Therefore, the servant must continuously strive against the self and turn away from these whispers. By doing so, they will attain Allah's guidance and the whispers will vanish. Thinking about the Hereafter, Paradise, and Hell is good if it results in diligent worship, eagerness for obedience, and avoidance of sins. However, if it becomes an unhealthy fear that cripples a person from fulfilling their obligations, then this is not appropriate. Strive in obedience to Allah, hoping for His reward and fearing His punishment. Know that Allah is more merciful to His servant than their own mother, and that His mercy precedes His wrath and encompasses all things.
