What is the ruling of Islamic law regarding a father who discriminates between his male and female children in treatment and assistance, preferring the females, and who reproaches his male children for raising, educating, and marrying them off, forgetting their rights upon him, seeing no rights for them after they reach the age of eighteen, and preferring his in-laws over them?

The father has a great right over his child, and Islamic law has obligated the child to honor his father and be kind to him. It is not permissible to abuse him or describe him with bad descriptions, no matter how much the father may have fallen short in his duty towards his child. Allah Almighty says: “And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And to parents, show goodness. If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor repel them, but address them in terms of honor. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, 'My Lord, have mercy upon them as they nurtured me when I was small.'”

On the other hand, it is not permissible for the father to exploit his right to oppress his children or fall short in their rights. He must be just among them in giving and in all matters, even emotional ones, so that hatred does not arise among them.

Children are advised to be patient with their father, advise him, and seek help from those who have influence with him, and to find excuses for his tenderness towards his weaker children, such as daughters. The father should help his children when needed. As for providing for adult children who are capable of earning, there is a difference of opinion, and the majority lean towards it not being obligatory. Children should strive to seek their livelihood instead of remaining dependent.

The children's work with their father is considered a donation and assistance unless an agreement on wages has been made or custom dictates it. Honoring one's in-laws is a good deed and an emulation of the Prophet, peace be upon him, and it promotes good relations between the spouses.
