Is the sacrificial animal sufficient for the livestock zakat, and is it permissible to sell a cow designated for sacrifice and buy another, keeping the price difference, or must the difference also be given out?

The sacrificial animal (Udhiyah) does not take the place of the zakat sheep, as the obligatory zakat must be given out and spent on its rightful recipients. Whereas the Udhiyah is a Sunnah for all household members, and it is recommended to eat from it, give some as gifts, and donate some. It is not permissible to sell the Udhiyah if it has been designated with a لفظ (utterance/expression) indicating that it is an Udhiyah. Its sale would then be void, and it must be reclaimed if it is still in existence. However, if it has perished, the greater part of its value should be reclaimed from the buyer, and another Udhiyah should be purchased with it. But if it was not designated with a لفظ, but only by intention, then it is permissible to sell it.
