What can I do for Allah to remove this affliction from me, knowing that I have been suffering from a mental illness for 14 years, have faced problems at work, have been delayed in marriage, and my family treats me badly after my mother cursed me when I was in high school?
The mother's right is great, for Allah has enjoined good treatment of her, and the Shari'ah has allocated three-quarters of righteousness to the mother. Her ill-treatment does not justify ill-treating her in return. We advise being keen on gaining the mother's satisfaction, being patient with her, dealing with her gently, and avoiding disobedience. When angry, one can distance themselves from her to avoid bad actions. We advise supplicating and asking for well-being, performing (Islamic incantation), and not despairing in seeking employment or a righteous spouse. There is no obligation to inform a suitor about a psychological illness unless it reaches the level of insanity. Maintaining kinship ties is obligatory, even if relatives cut them off, because the one who maintains ties is he who connects with those who cut him off. If visiting causes harm, ties can be maintained through other means like calling, for anything considered a connection by custom is a connection.
