What is the ruling on one who seeks to separate a son from his father?

One who seeks to separate a son from his father is subject to one of three situations:

1. Their differing in religion, and there is a fear of apostasy for the Muslim among them. In this case, separation is obligatory, along with maintaining good companionship.

2. One of them inviting to an innovation (bid'ah) or an unsound doctrine. In this case, separation is also obligatory, along with maintaining good companionship.

3. Both of them being upon goodness and righteousness, and the separation is for the sake of fleeting worldly matters. This is a grave danger, as it involves engaging in discord (fitnah) and slander (namimah), which are major sins.
