There is no necessary connection between guardianship (wilayah) and financial support (nafaqah). Guardianship may be forfeited while financial support remains obligatory, or financial support may be forfeited while guardianship remains. Among the circumstances that cause the forfeiture of guardianship are loss of competency, such as insanity or minority, and the guardian's obstruction (adhl) in marriage. There is a disagreement regarding whether guardianship over marriage is forfeited due to فسق (open sinfulness), and the more preponderant opinion is that it is not forfeited.
