If a man dies leaving behind a daughter and a son of a brother's son, then the daughter receives half, based on the Almighty's saying: "And if there is only one daughter, she receives half." The remainder goes to the son of the brother's son by way of 'asaba (agnatic succession), based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Give the prescribed shares to those entitled to them, and whatever remains is for the nearest male relative."
