What is the ruling on one who maintains the obligatory duties yet drinks alcohol?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Drinking alcohol is a grave sin that incurs a prescribed punishment (hadd) in this world and severe torment in the Hereafter for whoever dies without repenting from it. It is an abomination and a work of Satan. Allah has warned its drinker that He will make him drink from "teenat al-khabal," which is the excretion of the dwellers of Hellfire.

Whoever is afflicted with drinking alcohol must sincerely repent and not return to it. They should seek help through prayer and all religious obligations to abandon it, associate with righteous people, avoid bad company, acquire beneficial knowledge, change their surrounding environment, all while supplicating and contemplating the consequences.
