Is it permissible to slaughter two cows on the day of Ashura with the intention of giving charity to the poor?

Designating the day of Ashura for animal sacrifice or providing food is a reprehensible innovation (bid'ah munkarah) that was not practiced by the Prophet, peace be upon him, nor his companions, nor any of the Salaf (pious predecessors) or Imams. The correct practice is that it is sunnah (recommended) to fast on it, along with the ninth day, based on the Prophet's saying, peace be upon him: "If I live until the next year, I shall certainly fast the ninth [of Muharram] along with the tenth." As for preparing special food, or renewing clothes, or expanding expenditure, or buying the year's provisions, or performing a specific act of worship, or intending to sacrifice, or storing sacrificial meat to cook grains with it, or applying kohl, or dyeing with henna, or bathing, or shaking hands, or visiting each other, or visiting mosques and shrines, and similar acts—all of this is from the reprehensible innovations that were neither legislated by the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, nor by his Rightly Guided Caliphs, nor was it recommended by any of the Muslim Imams. Such innovations should be combated and warned against. And whoever wishes to sacrifice with the intention of charity has ample time during the rest of the year.
