What is the recompense for one who bears false witness and falsely swears upon the Book of Allah, and will repentance benefit him?

False testimony is one of the gravest major sins and greatest transgressions. If it is accompanied by an oath, especially on the Qur’an, then the sin becomes even greater. This oath is called yamin al-ghamūs (the immersive oath) because it immerses its taker in sin or in the Fire. Whoever commits this must hasten to sincere repentance (tawbah nasūḥ). Part of perfecting this repentance is to compensate for any damages caused by his testimony. According to the majority of scholars, there is no expiation (kaffarah) for yamin al-ghamūs. However, the Shafi'is hold that an expiation for an oath is obligatory in this case, and this is more cautious. Sincere repentance erases what came before it.
