What is the ruling on consuming naswar, which leads to addiction, causes cancer and digestive diseases, destroys teeth, and affects mental development? And should one gradually quit it or stop it completely?
"Al-Nasfai" is a substance composed of tobacco leaves and additives that facilitate its absorption through the mouth, and it is known as "shamah." Sheikh Muhammad ibn Ibrahim issued a prohibiting it, considering it to be from the forbidden tobacco powder, and based on the words of Allah Almighty: (And He prohibits for them evil things). "Al-Nasfai" is prohibited for reasons including:
1. Wasting money on something harmful. Allah Almighty says: (And do not be wasteful; indeed, He does not like the wasteful). 2. Harming oneself. Allah Almighty says: (And do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction).
The addict must quit it, and a husband's anger when quitting does not permit its use, because forbidden things are only permitted out of necessity, which this anger does not amount to. The hardship of parting with "Al-Nasfai" is a common hardship, and it decreases as resolve strengthens and the period of abstention lengthens. The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has issued a fatwa prohibiting it and obligating its cessation with sincere resolve and strong will, and by increasing the remembrance of Allah and seeking forgiveness. If the husband refuses complete cessation, a gradual reduction can be attempted.
