Is it permissible for a wife to pay her due zakat on gold to her indebted husband to settle his debts?

Zakat is not obligatory for the husband on behalf of his wife. It is permissible for a wife to give her zakat to her poor husband, based on the hadith of Zaynab, the wife of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, who was told that her husband and children had the most right to her charity. This view is supported by the Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta, contrary to some scholars who prohibited it. However, it is not permissible for a husband to give his zakat to his wife, because her maintenance is obligatory upon him.
