The answer

Al-Suyuti mentioned in "Al-Durr Al-Manthur" that the reason for the revelation of the verse: "And We have enjoined upon man goodness to his parents. But if they endeavor to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them. To Me is your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do" (Al-Ankabut: 8), was that the mother of Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas refrained from food and drink until he disbelieved in Muhammad. He also narrated from Qatadah that the verse was revealed concerning Sa'd ibn Malik when he migrated, and his mother threatened that no shade would shelter him until he returned. So, Allah revealed that he should treat them with kindness, but not obey them in associating partners with Allah.
