Is it possible to combine the intention of having good character for the sake of Allah Almighty with the intention of gaining affection to achieve success at work, without losing the reward for good character?

The fundamental principle of acts of worship is to purify one's intention for the sake of Allah the Almighty. Good character is among the acts of worship commanded by Islamic law. Allah the Almighty says: "So whoever hopes for the meeting with his Lord, let him do righteous work and not associate anyone with the worship of his Lord." Whoever improves his character seeking the face of Allah will be rewarded, but whoever improves it solely for worldly gain will have no reward. As for one who improves it for the sake of Allah and also intends a worldly benefit, his deed is not invalidated, but his reward will not be like that of one who dedicates the act purely to Allah alone.
