The answer

The correct approach is for a man to strive to please his mother and obey her, because the Lord's pleasure lies in the pleasure of the parents, especially the mother. This is indicated by the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "The Lord's pleasure is in the parent's pleasure, and the Lord's displeasure is in the parent's displeasure." Also, in the Hadith of Abu Hurairah, when asked about who is most deserving of good companionship, he said: "Your mother." He asked: "Then who?" He said: "Then your mother." He asked: "Then who?" He said: "Then your mother." He asked: "Then who?" He said: "Then your father."

So, if the mother commands her son to stay with her and he is not harmed by it, then it is obligatory for him to obey her, except in disobedience to Allah the Almighty. It is also obligatory for the mother to forgive and pardon, and not to be too strict with her son. Righteousness is determined by custom and the son's diligence in pleasing his parents, being dutiful to them, and being kind to them to the best of his ability.
