If the husband's mother harms her son's wife, she is an oppressor. The husband must treat his wife well and protect her from harm. He should not honor his parents by oppressing his wife; rather, he should combine honoring them with treating her well. The wife should explain this to her husband gently and wisely, and be keen to treat his family well, for responding to evil with good brings affection. If life does not improve, she should weigh the harm of divorce against the harm of staying and choose the lesser of the two harms.
