Is it permissible for me to impugn the honor of someone who impugned my honor, on the principle of "an eye for an eye"?

It is permissible for the oppressed to take revenge and punish the oppressor in proportion to the injustice suffered, as indicated by Allah's saying: "Allah does not like the public utterance of evil, except by one who has been wronged." However, forgiveness and patience are better and carry a greater reward, as stated by Allah: "But whoever pardons and makes reconciliation - his reward is due from Allah." And His saying: "And if you punish [an enemy], punish with an equivalent of that with which you were punished. But if you are patient - it is better for those who are patient." These verses are more general than Allah's saying: "And We ordained for them therein a life for a life, an eye for an eye, a nose for a nose, an ear for an ear, a tooth for a tooth, and for wounds is legal retribution," which informs about what was prescribed for the Children of Israel in the Torah.
