If the anger is so severe as to lead to a loss of awareness when uttering the divorce, then the divorce does not take effect. However, if the anger is less than that, the rulings depend on the intention. The phrase "You are divorced, divorced, divorced" results in a single divorce if the intention was to emphasize, and three divorces if the intention was to establish (new instances). An expiation for an oath (kaffarat yamin) is required if the intention was to threaten. The phrase "You are forbidden to me" depends on the intention; it could be ẓihār, divorce, or an oath. As for the phrase "You have no return," it is null and void after three divorces. If it precedes fewer than three divorces, it might result in three divorces according to the Hanbalis. Swearing by Allah to confirm a divorce does not necessitate an expiation unless one swears that she will never wear the niqab at all.
