What is the Sharia ruling on a wife remaining with a husband who exploits her financially and emotionally, demands that she waive her rights, and threatens her with khul’ (divorce at the wife’s insistence) and abandoning her children should she object, especially given that she has borne all the burdens of the home and children for 10 years?

If a husband does not spend on his wife and children and consumes her money, he is an oppressor and a squanderer of her rights. It is obligatory upon him to provide for them and to repay whatever he borrowed from her. The wife is not obligated to spend from her own money unless it is willingly. It is advised for the wife to strive in reforming her husband, reminding him to repent and to live together honorably, seeking help from righteous people, encouraging him to associate with the righteous, and frequently supplicating for his guidance. If he does not respond, she has the right to seek separation from him, and if he refuses divorce, she can take the matter to the Sharia court.
