The answer

It is permissible for a husband to strike his wife in a non-bruising manner that does not affect the face, after admonishing her and boycotting her in bed, when she shows defiance (nushuz), as stated in the verse: "As for those [wives] from whom you fear defiance, admonish them, forsake them in beds, and strike them."

However, humiliating her with insults and curses is not permissible, because it contradicts good companionship and is a transgression (fusuq), as in the Hadith: "Insulting a Muslim is a transgression."

If the wife insults and curses her husband, this is an injustice and defiance.

One should overlook the minor faults of a righteous wife to avoid separation, especially if there are children, while being patient with her and benefiting from the bright aspects of the relationship.

If cohabitation becomes impossible, then separation is permissible as a last resort.
