Is it permissible to request a divorce, despite the presence of children, in order to marry another person whom the questioner has loved for ten years?

The authentic Sunnah forbids a wife from asking her husband for divorce without a legitimate Shar'i reason. However, she is permitted to seek Khul' (divorce initiated by the wife by returning the Mahr or other compensation) if she dislikes him and fears falling into sin, as did the wife of Thabit ibn Qays. It is advisable to use reason and not be swayed by emotion, as children may be affected by separation, and a woman may not find happiness with another husband as she imagines, for the situation before marriage is not the same as after it. Therefore, she should fear Allah, be patient, and strive to turn her heart away from attachment to others.
