Does the Sunnah regarding the wedding banquet (walimah) apply to the man, the woman, or both, on the wedding night, given that the bride's family holds a banquet and the groom holds a banquet?

The Sunnah is for the wedding feast (walima) to be provided by the husband. This is indicated by the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying to Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf: "Give a walima, even if only with one sheep." It is also evident from his (peace be upon him) action when he freed Safiyyah and married her, and he held a walima for her with hais (a dish of dates, ghee, and cheese). He did not hold a walima for any of his other wives as grand as the one he held for Zaynab.

The walima is a right of the wife upon the husband. Some scholars have ruled that it can be legally compelled from him, while others have held that it is recommended (mustahabb) but not obligatory (wajib).

There is no legal impediment for the wife or her family to prepare a feast as an act of gratitude to Allah or to honor guests, but this feast would not be considered a walima in the sense of the Sunnah.
