What is the story of the Prophet Jeremiah, is he mentioned in the Holy Quran, and is it permissible to name a newborn after him?

Jeremiah, peace be upon him, is a prophet from among the Children of Israel who is not mentioned in the Holy Quran. There is disagreement regarding his era. It is narrated about him that he was sent to a king of the Children of Israel to guide him. Then, he was commanded to admonish the Children of Israel to abandon sins. Allah Almighty then responded to him after clarifying his weakness and need for strength. So, he delivered an eloquent sermon, warning them of Allah’s punishment. Allah revealed to him that He would destroy the Children of Israel through Japheth. Indeed, Allah empowered Nebuchadnezzar over them, who entered Jerusalem, destroyed it, and killed the Children of Israel.

Ibn al-Jawzi mentioned that Jeremiah was a young, ascetic man from among the sons of kings, and that he refused marriage for fear that it would distract him from the worship of his Lord. However, his father insisted on marrying him off, and he informed his wife that he had no desire for women.

What has been narrated in his story is from the accounts of the Children of Israel, which have not been authenticated from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. However, it is permissible to narrate them as long as they do not contradict Islamic Sharia. It is permissible to name a newborn Jeremiah; in fact, it may be desirable due to the stories mentioned about his prophethood and righteousness.
