Is it permissible to use non-genuine software (such as Windows and Photoshop) in producing Dawa pamphlets and CDs, knowing that they are expensive and our financial situation is not good?
It is not permissible to use copyrighted software without the owners' permission, because it involves harming others and encroaching upon their rights and property. This is based on the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "There should be no harm nor reciprocating harm," and: "The property of a Muslim person is not lawful except with his willing consent." Some scholars, however, permit copying for personal use only, if one needs it and the original copy is unavailable or one is unable to purchase it, provided that this is not used as a means of earning, trading, publishing, or distributing. One must be limited to the extent of personal need. Collaboration is possible to purchase original copies for work.
