Is it permissible for a person who is acquainted with the sayings of scholars and students of Islamic knowledge to adopt a fatwa concerning issues of divorce via the internet and scholarly websites, or to issue a fatwa for himself based on these fatwas and legal proofs, or is it obligatory to refer to a Mufti or a Sharia judge?

It is not permissible to rely on the internet for matters of Islamic law, unless one verifies that the website is supervised by people of knowledge and piety. Whoever relies on an unreliable website is not safe from falling into error, unlike one who relies on a book. The early Muslims (Salaf) criticized taking knowledge from books without scholars, saying: "He whose shaykh is his book, his errors will be more than his correctness." The fundamental principle is for the questioner to directly consult trustworthy scholars, or to send their question to a website renowned for accuracy. If one finds their exact issue in published fatwas, they may adopt it if they are qualified to distinguish between issues, and there is no difference in this regard between divorce and other matters.
