How can a woman save herself and act in the context of a troubled marriage to a husband who claims religious adherence yet mistreats her and her children, prevents her from obtaining citizenship, drives her to despair, and makes her wonder about her future and her children's future should he die?

Despairing of the supplication being answered is an error, for the answer is not limited to the fulfillment of what is requested. Rather, it may be in storing up reward or warding off evil. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade hastening the answer, because despair may lead to abandoning supplication. A believer should not abandon supplication, for it is an act of worship.

The caller to Islam should begin with his own family and not neglect advising and guiding them at the expense of calling others.

Forcing a wife to utter words of disbelief is dangerous. If it is merely a fear, then this marriage must be dissolved. If it has actually occurred, then that is apostasy, which nullifies good deeds and the marriage contract. Repentance and a return to Islam are obligatory.

Attention should first be given to reforming and building up one's religion, for a person is deprived if he is deprived of his religion.
