Which is better: memorizing the Qur'an by heart, or acting upon it?
Memorizing the Noble Qur’an and acting upon it is a great honor and an elevated status. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The best among you are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it." There is no contradiction between memorization and action, for the bearer of the Qur’an must act upon it, and one who does not memorize it must also act upon it. However, the bearer of the Qur’an bears a greater responsibility. Memorizing the Qur’an and acting upon it is better than merely acting upon it without memorization. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The one who is proficient with the Qur’an will be with the noble and righteous scribes (angels), and the one who recites the Qur’an and stutters over it, finding it difficult, will have two rewards." However, acting upon it is better than merely memorizing it without acting upon it.
