Is it better to gradually distance oneself from adultery than to cut oneself off from it all at once?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Adultery is a major sin that must be avoided, along with everything that leads to it, as Allah Almighty says: "And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an indecency and is evil as a way." (17:32) Anyone who commits it must immediately repent with sincere repentance. Adultery brings misfortune in this world and the Hereafter. Among its corrupting effects are: lack of religiosity, loss of piety, corruption of chivalry, lack of protective jealousy, treachery, lying, betrayal, and lack of modesty. It also causes Allah's wrath, darkening and gloom of the face, darkness of the heart, and poverty. It removes the perpetrator's sacred honor, causing them to fall from the sight of Allah and His servants, and strips them of the names of chastity, righteousness, and justice, bestowing upon them the names of the wicked, the corrupt, and the adulterer. It exposes the adulterer to dwelling in the oven mentioned in the hadith, and purity departs from them, replaced by impurity, as Allah Almighty says: "Bad women are for bad men, and bad men are for bad women. And good women are for good men, and good men are for good women." (24:26) It also brings about a sense of loneliness and unease that appears on the adulterer's face and affects those who sit with them.
