The question

What is the correct or best way to deal with obligatory prayer: focusing on its practical performance and making up for it when missed, even if devotion is lacking, or focusing on preparing oneself for prayer, even if that leads to delaying it or missing some of it, in order to establish prayer with conviction and positive impact?

The answer

Khushūʿ (devotional humility) is the spirit of worship, and Islam has given it great importance. Hadiths indicate the significance of khushūʿ in prayer, and the Almighty's saying: "Successful indeed are the believers those who are humble in their prayers," demonstrates its great status.

It is obligatory to perform prayers at their prescribed times, for prayer is "a-scripted-decree at a-set-time." Delaying a prayer until the time of the next prayer arrives is considered negligence. If performing prayer on time without khushūʿ conflicts with performing it after its time with khushūʿ, the majority of scholars hold that observing the sanctity of time takes precedence.

Abandoning prayer on the pretext of not being ready for it is a deception from Satan. One must strive to combine observing prayers at their prescribed times with performing them with khushūʿ as much as possible.
