The question

What is the ruling on dealing with a paternal aunt who cursed her niece with a curse that some jurists consider to be slander, taking into account her greatفضل (favor/bounty) upon her niece? Is it permissible to boycott her and suffice with merely greeting her, or would that be considered severing ties of kinship and ingratitude? And does dealing with someone who has done a favor then caused harm differ from dealing with others?

The answer

You have the right to seek victory for yourself through what is good and right (ma'ruf), but patience and forgiveness are more befitting. It is not permissible for you to abandon her unless continued relations will certainly lead to harm. The fact that she was a benefactor to you necessitates that you be patient with her and treat her kindly. It is legislated to overlook the faults of someone who is not generally known for evil.
