The answer

A man is permitted to have intercourse with his wives before performing ghusl (ritual bath), a matter upon which scholars have reached a consensus. However, it is preferable to perform ghusl between each act of intercourse. If ghusl is difficult, it is recommended to perform wudu (ablution) between them, or to wash the private parts and whatever has soiled them for one who wishes to sleep, eat, drink, or resume intercourse. The Prophet, peace be upon him, circulated among his wives with a single ghusl, and sometimes he would perform ghusl after each one, which indicates that all of these actions are permissible. The Prophet's conduct in circulating among his wives in one night was either with their consent or upon his return from a journey, as he was just among his wives.
