How can I strengthen myself against Satan, the ego, whims, and worldly allurements?

Man has three enemies: his worldly life (dunya), his devil (Shaytan), and his self (nafs). One must, therefore, be wary of them and resist them. As for the devil, his enmity is clear in the Qur'an, and his cunning can be warded off by seeking refuge (isti'adha) and remembrance (dhikr) of Allah. As for whims and desires (hawa), the warning against them is in the Almighty's saying: "And do not follow [personal] inclination, lest it lead you astray from the way of Allah." (Qur'an 38:26) Salvation from it lies in opposing it and seeking refuge in Allah. As for the self that incites evil (an-nafs al-ammarah bi as-su'), it is combatted by compelling it to obedience and abandoning disobedience, and by seeking Allah's help and being sincere to Him. As for worldly life (dunya), protection from its consequences is achieved by recalling Allah's condemnation of it and being cautious of relying on it, while knowing that it is not condemned absolutely; rather, it is a bridge to the Hereafter if it does not lead to disobeying Allah.
